According to global statistics, out of every 2,000 children born, 3 infants suffer injury to the brachial plexus during natural birth (and sometimes even cesarean section). This can lead to permanent and lasting effects, including hand paralysis (Erb’s Palsy) that appears from infancy, as well as other serious and lasting injuries that manifest over time. A significant percentage of newborns with brachial plexus injuries recover spontaneously within the first year of life. However, studies indicate that the likelihood of lifelong symptoms persists in 10 to 25 percent of these infants.
Fortunately, with advances in medical science, a considerable number of children suffering from lasting paralysis due to brachial plexus injury can be treated. Yet, due to lack of attention to new treatment methods and absence of necessary equipment, definitive treatment for these children is still not widely available in the country. Timely and proper diagnosis and treatment of these injuries can greatly improve long-term functional outcomes for the patient.
In this regard, Zanjireh Omid, with its skilled medical team, uses specialized biological glue for nerve transplantation as well as a nerve grafting system during these surgeries.
This method was first used in Iran in 2013 by the hand surgery team of Zanjireh Omid, led by Professor Philippe Valenti.
